ITAPOCU (Documentary, 2018, 30 min, Brazil)

Worked as a producer of the documentary Itapocu.

About the film: The film documents the Catumbi from Itapocu, a hundred-year-old tradition of black identity in the region. The celebration is marked by religious syncretism and involves music, dance and other rites. The film was intended to register the only group of Catumbi that still resists in southern Brazil: the Catumbi of Itapocu, in Araquari, in the north of Santa Catarina. In 2016 the project was contemplated by the Catarinense Prize of Cinema 2014/2015 of Foundation Catarinense of Culture (FCC), being filmed in 2017 and released in 2018/2019.

On the subject and the historical context: The Catumbi is an Afro-Brazilian rhythm similar to the congado and the reisado originated by the slaves in century XIX, mixing the coronation of the kings of the Congo with praises to catholic sanctities. It occurs quite frequently in other parts of Brazil, but in Santa Catarina, the tradition has practically been lost. The Afro-Brazilian celebrations denominated of Cacumbi or Catumbi honored Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict.
